Property Details

Fairford’s old bank has been reimagined across four floors, and every one of them earns its place. What was once the town’s Grade II listed banking hall is now one of the loveliest places to stay in Gloucestershire, restored with a real eye for colour, texture and the kind of detail you only notice on the second look.

Set right on Fairford’s honey-hued high street, the town begins at the front door. Independent shops, good coffee, a proper Italian and a handful of pubs are all a moment away, and St Mary’s Church, home to the only complete set of medieval stained glass windows in England, is a two-minute walk.

Think handmade sofas beneath windows overlooking the market square, a kitchen that opens straight into the living space, and two bedrooms tucked beneath the eaves. Below it all, the original bank vault survives, now a snug hideaway with a velvet sofa and no daylight at all. Bank House is for anyone who wants a beautiful, walkable Cotswold town on their doorstep and somewhere genuinely considered to come home to.

Exploring the Cotswolds from Fairford

Fairford sits perfectly for exploring the southern Cotswolds. Lechlade and the upper Thames are a few minutes away, and Bibury, widely regarded as the prettiest village in England, is fifteen minutes by car, where Arlington Row and the old trout farm are worth an unhurried morning.

Cirencester is twenty minutes and rewards a full day, with independent shops, twice-weekly markets, the Corinium Museum and one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in Britain. Burford, the gateway to the Cotswolds, is around half an hour, as is Cotswold Wildlife Park. Closer to home, Kelmscott Manor, William Morris’s country retreat, sits beside the Thames just twenty minutes away, and the lakes of the Cotswold Water Park are a short drive west.

Some of the country’s best pub kitchens are scattered between them, from The New Inn at Coln St Aldwyns and The Swan at Southrop to The Ox Barn at Thyme and The Wild Rabbit at Kingham. Cheltenham and its racecourse are within an hour, and Swindon and Kemble stations offer direct trains to London Paddington in a little over an hour.

Why stay in Fairford

Fairford is a proper working Cotswold town rather than a film set, which is exactly what makes it worth staying in. It has the honey-coloured stone and the market square, but it also has a high street people genuinely shop on, and none of the coach-party crowds that fill Bibury and Bourton by mid-morning.

It also happens to be home to RAF Fairford, which hosts the Royal International Air Tattoo each July, the largest military air show in the world. Staying at a luxury holiday cottage in Fairford puts you within walking distance of one of the most extraordinary weekends in the county’s calendar.
